The Accommodation - four furnished self-catering homes. Reservations by the week from June to September and over the weekend or by the week for the rest of the year. Each of the four houses is independent, and each has its own terrace with table and barbecue. These houses are situated in the estate of a medieval castle. The houses have been lovingly restored recently. The castle was restored at the end of the 19th century.

Sommery castle and its estate date back to the year 10 AD when the Romans discovered the marble quarries on the north bank of the Loire and built a bridge over the river. On the high land overlooking the river and away from the spring floods they built a fortification known as Summa Riva. This fort was constantly modified over the years together with the small agricultural development that surrounded it. By 1280, the name had changed to Sommery which has remained until this day. The Castle was completely restored in 1870. Sommery overlooks the river Loire. Gilly with its post office and village shop is half a mile away. For general food shopping, Digoin is 12 miles away. You have a wide choice of fresh fish, wine, meat and everything else you might want. In Digoin there is also a main post office and there are three banks.

The Castle and Gites - Four Stone Built Houses near the castle have been beautifully restored as holiday homes, and decorated in order to keep their original character. Each is fully equipped and centrally heated. There's a private pool 12 ft by 25 ft and 4ft 6 deep. Near it there's an open barn that has been converted into a play area with a ping-pong table, swings, climbing ropes, a climbing net, a seesaw and an old hay waggon. There's also an area to play Pétanque, the French national sport of bowls. A paddock in front of the house is the home of a herd of miniature goats and a small flock of miniature sheep.

The Castle and Gites

The climate is continental. From May to September it normally rains very little. July temperatures range between 24 and 32. In August they may go up to 40 - 42. The Autumn is not normally cold but can be rainy. In January there's frost at night and it rains on and off until Easter, though in the daytime it's seldom cold.

The Park - The castle is surrounded by its own park of 60 acres of fields and woods. It is entirely fenced. Access is by a driveway of 300 yards. The only cars are those that come to the castle, which is not open to the public, and an occasional tractor belonging to the neighbouring farmer.
